Finland backs conservation in the Russian Republic of Karelia A joint initiative has been proposed by Enso (a major paper production company), the Ministry of Environment in Finland, and the Russian Republic of Karelia to prepare a conservation plan for the Green Belt of Karelia, one of the Global 200 ecoregions.

Below are the steps that governments are urged to take.
- Commit to support the development of the Forest Stewardship Council in your country
- Commit to the achievement of the WWF minimum 10% target for forest protected areas and to adopt a
policy of sustainability towards the remaining forests
- Establish networks of protected areas that help ensure conservation of the Global 200
- Ratify, strengthen, and fulfill obligations under treaties such as the UN Climate Convention,
the Biodiversity Convention, and the new world Fisheries treaty
- End subsidies that encourage over exploitation of fish stocks
- Adopt policies that reduce dependence on coal, oil, and gas
- End the unsustainable trade in wildlife, and take action to save the tiger, the giant panda, and the African black rhino
- Be sparing in your use of water
- Track down illegal dealers in threatened animal species
- Work on a worldwide basis to protect the most important wetlands
